Frequently Asked Questions
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Whether you found me through my website, Thumbtack, or mutual friends is only the beginning. Once we determine we are a good fit for each other, we’d take the conversation offline to decide more specific needs for your event…whether it be specific accessories, me purchasing alcohol, or consulting on special cocktails! Once all details are solidified, I’d draw up a contract ensuring we’re all on the same page. Once agreed upon from both sides and signed by both parties, we’re good to go! The Startender is ready to provide you the top notch service your event deserves!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Outside of my 20+ years of bartending experience, I have completed my eTIPs training focusing on alcohol consumption, ensuring you are serving to those of legal age, and the safety of all patrons.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I've been bartending for 20+ years. During my time in the U.S. Marine Corps, I started bartending as a second source of income and never stopped. From the military to college to Corporate America, I've always bartended on the side. From dive bars, to sports bars, to bourbon houses, and finally to a neighborhood bar currently, it's not hard for me to find a home and keep the customer base satisfied and welcomed. I'm a wizard at converting a new customer base to regulars!
What types of customers have you worked with?
I’ve worked weddings receptions, corporate events, tailgates, private in-home events, baby showers, military events, fraternal/sorority gatherings, and bachelor/bachelorette parties. No complaints to date! With my own internal expectations of myself...I only expect the positive feedback to remain the same!
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
Ahhh...the wedding of Hughie and Kortney! SO MUCH FUN! Headcount was around 200 guests! I brought a second bartender with me! The vibe was electric! So many smiling faces! Hours were 3pm - 10pm. The couple ended up asking us to stay an extra hour and we happily obliged! The positivity and energy surrounding us was absolutely breath-taking. The family invited us out the next day to a brunch at their home! Such a welcoming experience all around. The family was phenomenal! The guests were satisfied! And the Startender experience was on full display!
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
First and foremost, always ensure the bartender you hire is the right professional for your guests. Whether your event is a Halloween-themed wedding or a wedding-themed Halloween party (lol), you always want to make sure your bartender is engaging with your guests!
Make sure you are aware of where your bartender is coming from. It would never make sense to hire a bartender 2 hours away from your location where travel expense may cost more than his/her services...unless you absolutely want that particular bartender...aka...The Startender!
Watch out for scams! I've seen where quotes provided are insanely ridiculous. For example, the current rate for gas mileage is typically in between $.65 - $.70/mile and getting more and more expensive. You will find some "professionals" charging $1/mile driving that contract through the roof.
Speaking of contracts, sign one! This holds you and your bartender accountable. And make sure what was discussed via an app or a phone conversation matches what the contract states. Understanding contracts can be lengthy…invest the time to look it over and ask all the questions.
